Common Phrases for Giving Directions

To give directions, you need to know these expressions. Try to learn them and understand what each one means.

Also, remember that in English ā€œmanzana (espacio urbano delimitado por calles por todos los lados)ā€ = ā€œblockā€. So, ā€œsiga recto 2 manzanasā€ in English would be: ā€œGo straight 2 blocks.ā€

When someone asks where to go, you can give clear directions with these phrases:

  • ā€œGo straightā€ – Keep walking in the same direction.
Example: ā€œGo straight and you’ll see the restaurant on the right.ā€
  • ā€œTurn rightā€ – Change direction to the right.
Example: ā€œTurn right at the corner, and the library is on the left.ā€
  • ā€œTurn leftā€ – Change direction to the left.
Example: ā€œTurn left after the traffic light. The park is there.ā€
  • ā€œIt’s on the [left/right]ā€ – Tell them where the place is located.
Example: ā€œThe bakery is on the left.ā€
  • ā€œIt’s next to [place]ā€ – Tell them the place is very close.
Example: ā€œThe cinema is next to the shopping center.ā€
  • ā€œIt’s across from [place]ā€ – Tell them the place is directly opposite.
Example: ā€œThe bus station is across from the park.ā€
  • ā€œIt’s between [place] and [place]ā€ – Tell them the place is in the middle of two other places.
Example: ā€œThe bank is between the school and the supermarket.ā€
