Key Facts and Historical Dates:

  1. 1775 – The Beginning:
    • April 19, 1775: The first shots of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts, starting the war between the American colonies and Great Britain.
  2. 1776 – Declaration of Independence:
    • July 4, 1776: The Continental Congress, led by Thomas Jefferson, adopted the Declaration of Independence. This document declared the colonies free from British rule and highlighted the principles of liberty and equality.
  3. 1777 – The Turning Point:
    • October 17, 1777: The Battle of Saratoga resulted in a decisive victory for the Americans and is considered the turning point of the Revolution. It convinced France to enter the war as an ally to the Americans.
  4. 1781 – Victory at Yorktown:
    • October 19, 1781: The Siege of Yorktown ended with British General Cornwallis’s surrender to General George Washington and French forces. This effectively ended major combat operations and paved the way for peace negotiations.
  5. 1783 – Treaty of Paris:
    • September 3, 1783: The Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the Revolutionary War and recognizing American independence.
