Modal Verbs: Learn to talk about what people do at work


Learning goals:

  • Recognize and list common modal verbs such as can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must.
  • Understand the basic meanings and uses of each modal verb.
  • Use modal verbs to express present and past ability (can/could) and possibility (may/might).
  • Use modal verbs appropriately to ask for and give permission (e.g., Can I…? May I…? You may…).
  • Express obligation and necessity using must, have to, and should.
  • Understand the subtle differences in meaning between similar modal verbs (e.g., can vs. could, may vs. might).
  • Explore and incorporate additional modal verbs like shall, would, and ought to in conversations and writing.
  • Develop the ability to self-assess and correct the use of modal verbs through peer review and teacher feedback.

Learning activities:
1.- Activity “Modals Uno”: Players must make a sentence using the assigned modal verb for the color/number of the card they are playing. For example, if playing a red card, they must make a sentence with “can”. The next player continues the chain using the same modal verb or, if unable, draws a card from the draw pile. This activity not only helps practice modal verbs in a playful manner but also encourages creativity and interaction in using these modal verbs.
