Learning goals:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and use synonyms appropriately in context.
Resources: C1 Cambridge Activities.
Learning activities:
Activity 1: Matching Synonyms :
- Distribute a handout with pairs of synonyms to each student or project them on the board.
- Have students match the synonyms in pairs. Encourage them to use the words in sentences to demonstrate their understanding.
- Review the answers as a class, discussing any questions or difficulties that arise.
Activity 2: Synonym Contextual Usage :
- Provide a short paragraph or sentences containing the target synonyms (e.g., sentences with blanks).
- Ask students to fill in the blanks with appropriate synonyms from the list. Discuss their choices as a class.
- Encourage students to explain why they chose a particular synonym for each context.
Group Activity: Synonym Story :
- Divide the class into small groups.
- Give each group a list of synonyms and a prompt or theme (e.g., “write a short story using at least five of the synonyms”).
- Allow groups a few minutes to create a short story or dialogue using the synonyms creatively.
- Have each group share their story with the class.
Wrap-Up :
- Summarize the key points about synonyms.
- Encourage students to continue practicing synonyms in their reading and writing.
- Assign homework, such as finding synonyms in a newspaper article or a book they are currently reading.
Homework : Assign a worksheet or online exercises that require students to identify and use synonyms in different contexts.
Assessment: Assess students’ understanding through their participation in class activities and their completion of any homework assignments related to synonyms.
Extension : Challenge advanced students with more complex synonyms or explore antonyms to deepen their vocabulary skills.
