Enhancing English Proficiency: Advanced Grammar, Vocabulary Expansion, and Reading Comprehension.


Learning goals:
The overarching objective of the entire two-week lesson plan, is to advance students’ English language proficiency at the C1 level. The lessons aim to:

– Enhance Language Skills: Develop advanced grammar and syntax knowledge, expand vocabulary, and improve reading comprehension to enable students to communicate more effectively, write more precisely, and understand complex texts.

– Foster Critical Thinking: Encourage critical thinking and analytical skills by discussing, interpreting, and reflecting on texts and language structures.

– Build Confidence: Instill confidence in students to use advanced grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies in both academic and real-life contexts.

– Facilitate Natural Expression: Help students sound more natural in their English usage by teaching idiomatic expressions and collocations, which are key to natural, native-like communication.
Promote Interactive Learning: Engage students in interactive activities, discussions, and exercises to create a dynamic and immersive learning environment.

Strengthen Language Foundation: Lay a strong foundation for advanced language learning, which can be built upon as students continue their English language journey.

Learning activities:

Week 1: Days 1, 2, and 3

Day 1: Advanced Grammar and Syntax (90 minutes)

Objective: Introduce complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subjunctive mood.
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts with sentences for practice.

Introduction (10 minutes)
Welcome the students and explain the objectives for the day.
Discuss the importance of advanced grammar and syntax in enhancing writing and communication.

Complex Sentence Structures (30 minutes)
Introduce relative clauses and explain their purpose and structure.
Provide examples and ask students to create sentences with relative clauses.
Discuss when and how to use relative clauses.

Subjunctive Mood (30 minutes)
Define the subjunctive mood and its usage for expressing hypothetical or unreal situations.
Provide examples and have students practice creating sentences using the subjunctive mood.
Discuss common expressions and situations where the subjunctive is used.

Practice Exercises (20 minutes)
Distribute handouts with sentences for practice.
Have students identify and correct complex sentence structures and subjunctive mood in the sentences.

Day 2: Vocabulary Expansion (90 minutes)
Objective: Teach advanced vocabulary and idiomatic expressions related to a specific theme.
Materials: Vocabulary lists, sample sentences, exercises, and a whiteboard.

Introduction (10 minutes)
Recap the previous day’s lesson briefly.
Introduce the theme for today’s vocabulary expansion: “Emotions.”

Teaching New Vocabulary (30 minutes)
Present a list of advanced vocabulary words related to emotions.
Provide definitions, example sentences, and pronunciation guidance.
Encourage students to ask questions and discuss the words.

Idioms and Collocations (30 minutes)
Introduce idiomatic expressions and collocations related to emotions.
Provide examples and discuss when and how to use them.
Have students create sentences using the idioms and collocations.

Interactive Vocabulary Exercises (20 minutes)
Engage students in activities like vocabulary games, word associations, and fill-in-the-blank exercises to reinforce their understanding of the new words.

Day 3: Reading Comprehension (90 minutes)

Objective: Develop advanced reading comprehension skills.
Materials: Texts with advanced vocabulary, comprehension questions, and a whiteboard.

Introduction (10 minutes)
Discuss the importance of strong reading comprehension skills.
Explain the objectives for the day and introduce the text.

Reading and Vocabulary Analysis (30 minutes)
Distribute the selected text with advanced vocabulary.
Read the text aloud and ask students to highlight unfamiliar words.
Discuss the meaning and usage of these words.

Comprehension Questions (30 minutes)
Provide a list of comprehension questions related to the text.
Have students work in pairs or small groups to answer these questions and discuss their responses.

Class Discussion (20 minutes)
Engage the class in a discussion about the text’s content, themes, and vocabulary.
Encourage students to share their interpretations and opinions.

Week 2: Days 4, 5, and 6

Day 4: Vocabulary Building and Review (90 minutes)
Objective: Review and reinforce the vocabulary from Week 1 and Day 2.Materials: Vocabulary lists, review exercises, and a whiteboard.

Vocabulary Review (30 minutes)
Begin by reviewing the vocabulary words introduced in Week 1 and Day 2.
Engage the students in activities such as matching words with definitions and creating sentences with the words.

Idioms and Collocations Review (30 minutes)
Review the idiomatic expressions and collocations related to emotions.
Encourage students to use these expressions in sentences.

Interactive Vocabulary Exercises (20 minutes)
Conduct vocabulary games and exercises to reinforce the words and expressions learned during the past week.


Day 5: Advanced Grammar and Syntax (90 minutes)
Objective: Introduce advanced tenses and reported speech.
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts with sentences for practice.
