Nouns

HeyGen Introduction Video

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. It’s like the main character of a sentence! Without nouns, you wouldn’t be able to talk about people, places, or anything in the world!

Here are some examples of nouns:

Let’s look at the four main types of nouns that you need to know:

1. People – Nouns that name people.

Examples:

  • teacher
  • friend
  • mother
  • John

Example Sentence: ā€œMy teacher is very kind.ā€
(ā€œTeacherā€ is the noun here!)

2. Places – Nouns that name places.

Examples:

  • School
  • Park
  • City
  • Beach

Example Sentence: ā€œWe go to the park every weekend.ā€
(ā€œParkā€ is the noun here!)

3. Things – Nouns that name things (objects, animals, ideas).

Examples:

  • Book
  • Dog
  • Laptop
  • Car

Example Sentence: ā€œMy dog loves playing with a ball.ā€
(ā€œDogā€ and ā€œballā€ are nouns here!)

4. Ideas or Feelings – Nouns that name things you can’t touch but are real.

Examples:

  • Happiness
  • Love
  • Fear
  • Friendship

Singular vs. Plural Nouns

Singular Nouns: When we talk about one thing.
Example: “I have a dog.” (Only one dog!)

Plural Nouns: When we talk about more than one thing. We usually add ā€œ-sā€ to the noun.
Example: “I have two dogs.” (More than one dog!)

However, plural nouns don’t always just add an s. There are other rules too, which are explained in the second part of the following video.

Here’s an activity to check if you understand what nouns are.

The next activity will let you practice singular and plural nouns.
