Prepositions of place are words that tell us where something is. They help us describe locations, give directions, and talk about our rooms, school, or city.

IN – Inside Something šŸ“¦

  • Use “IN” when something is inside a container or space.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe book is IN the box.ā€
    • ā€œThe cat is IN the house.ā€
    • ā€œMy keys are IN my bag.ā€

ON – On the Surface of Something šŸ–„ļø

  • Use “ON” when something is on top of a surface or object.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe pencil is ON the desk.ā€
    • ā€œThe plate is ON the table.ā€
    • ā€œI put my shoes ON the chair.ā€

BEHIND – At the Back of Something 🚪

  • Use “BEHIND” when something is at the back of another object or person.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe chair is BEHIND the desk.ā€
    • ā€œThe dog is BEHIND the door.ā€
    • ā€œThe car is parked BEHIND the house.ā€

UNDER – Below Something ā¬‡ļø

  • Use “UNDER” when something is below or beneath something else.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe shoes are UNDER the bed.ā€
    • ā€œThe cat is hiding UNDER the table.ā€
    • ā€œThe book is UNDER the chair.ā€

IN FRONT OF – Facing Something šŸƒā€ā™€ļø

  • Use “IN FRONT OF” when something is ahead of or facing another thing.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe car is IN FRONT OF the house.ā€
    • ā€œThe teacher is IN FRONT OF the classroom.ā€
    • ā€œThe restaurant is IN FRONT OF the cinema.ā€

NEXT TO (BY) – Beside Something šŸ‘Æā€ā™€ļø

  • Use “NEXT TO” or “BY” when something is beside or close to another thing.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe school is NEXT TO the park.ā€
    • ā€œThe library is BY the supermarket.ā€
    • ā€œThe chair is NEXT TO the desk.ā€

ABOVE – Higher Than Something ā¬†ļø

  • Use “ABOVE” when something is higher than something else.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe picture is ABOVE the sofa.ā€
    • ā€œThere is a bird ABOVE the tree.ā€
    • ā€œThe light is ABOVE the door.ā€

BELOW – Lower Than Something ā¬‡ļø

  • Use “BELOW” when something is lower than something else.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe drawer is BELOW the table.ā€
    • ā€œThe shoes are BELOW the shelf.ā€
    • ā€œThe basement is BELOW the house.ā€

BETWEEN – In the Middle of Two Things ā†”ļø

  • Use “BETWEEN” when something is in the middle of two other things.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe park is BETWEEN the school and the library.ā€
    • ā€œThe cat is sitting BETWEEN the two chairs.ā€
    • ā€œMy house is BETWEEN the supermarket and the cinema.ā€

TO THE LEFT – On the Left Side of Something ā¬…ļø

  • Use “TO THE LEFT” to show something is on the left side of something.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe post office is TO THE LEFT of the school.ā€
    • ā€œThe window is TO THE LEFT of the door.ā€
    • ā€œThe book is TO THE LEFT of the laptop.ā€

TO THE RIGHT – On the Right Side of Something āž”ļø

  • Use “TO THE RIGHT” to show something is on the right side of something.
  • Examples:
    • ā€œThe bank is TO THE RIGHT of the supermarket.ā€
    • ā€œThe picture is TO THE RIGHT of the bed.ā€
    • ā€œMy friend is sitting TO THE RIGHT of me.ā€
