Prepositions of place are words that tell us where something is. They help us describe locations, give directions, and talk about our rooms, school, or city.

IN – Inside Something 📦
- Use “IN” when something is inside a container or space.
- Examples:
- “The book is IN the box.”
- “The cat is IN the house.”
- “My keys are IN my bag.”
ON – On the Surface of Something 🖥️
- Use “ON” when something is on top of a surface or object.
- Examples:
- “The pencil is ON the desk.”
- “The plate is ON the table.”
- “I put my shoes ON the chair.”
BEHIND – At the Back of Something 🚪
- Use “BEHIND” when something is at the back of another object or person.
- Examples:
- “The chair is BEHIND the desk.”
- “The dog is BEHIND the door.”
- “The car is parked BEHIND the house.”
UNDER – Below Something ⬇️
- Use “UNDER” when something is below or beneath something else.
- Examples:
- “The shoes are UNDER the bed.”
- “The cat is hiding UNDER the table.”
- “The book is UNDER the chair.”
IN FRONT OF – Facing Something 🏃♀️
- Use “IN FRONT OF” when something is ahead of or facing another thing.
- Examples:
- “The car is IN FRONT OF the house.”
- “The teacher is IN FRONT OF the classroom.”
- “The restaurant is IN FRONT OF the cinema.”
NEXT TO (BY) – Beside Something 👯♀️
- Use “NEXT TO” or “BY” when something is beside or close to another thing.
- Examples:
- “The school is NEXT TO the park.”
- “The library is BY the supermarket.”
- “The chair is NEXT TO the desk.”
ABOVE – Higher Than Something ⬆️
- Use “ABOVE” when something is higher than something else.
- Examples:
- “The picture is ABOVE the sofa.”
- “There is a bird ABOVE the tree.”
- “The light is ABOVE the door.”
BELOW – Lower Than Something ⬇️
- Use “BELOW” when something is lower than something else.
- Examples:
- “The drawer is BELOW the table.”
- “The shoes are BELOW the shelf.”
- “The basement is BELOW the house.”
BETWEEN – In the Middle of Two Things ↔️
- Use “BETWEEN” when something is in the middle of two other things.
- Examples:
- “The park is BETWEEN the school and the library.”
- “The cat is sitting BETWEEN the two chairs.”
- “My house is BETWEEN the supermarket and the cinema.”
TO THE LEFT – On the Left Side of Something ⬅️
- Use “TO THE LEFT” to show something is on the left side of something.
- Examples:
- “The post office is TO THE LEFT of the school.”
- “The window is TO THE LEFT of the door.”
- “The book is TO THE LEFT of the laptop.”
TO THE RIGHT – On the Right Side of Something ➡️
- Use “TO THE RIGHT” to show something is on the right side of something.
- Examples:
- “The bank is TO THE RIGHT of the supermarket.”
- “The picture is TO THE RIGHT of the bed.”
- “My friend is sitting TO THE RIGHT of me.”
